NaPali Coast couples

FAQs

Intro

Where is the NaPali Coast? The NaPali Coast is located on the northwest coast of Kauai. It stretches for about 17 miles and is famous for its dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, waterfalls, and remote beaches. The destination for this adventure is Kalalau Beach, often referred to as the "last beach." Because there are no roads it can only be accessed by hiking the 11-mile Kalalau Trail, or by kayaking a large stretch of the coast. Boats are not permitted to access Kalalau Beach. This adventure retreat takes us up and down the Kalalau trail to Kalalau beach, which will be our remote home for 3 nights.

What type of shape do I need to be in for this trip? You don't need to be a marathon runner or a hardcore mountaineer, but a good level of fitness is necessary. The good news is there is plenty of time to prepare and we will give you lots of tips for your training. We have found that having something to train for increases motivation to exercise and makes it easier to say no to the ice cream and Oreos at night (sometimes). If you're comfortable hiking for a few hours with a weighted backpack, you'll do great! They key to this hike is pacing yourself, staying hydrated, and taking plenty of breaks to enjoy the stunning views...emphasis on STUNNING.

What if I've never been backpacking before? Then you're in for an adventure and have come to the right place! We can't think of a better place for your first backpacking adventure. Backpacking is basically hiking with a little extra weight and a lot more snacks. As long as you're prepared with the right gear, a good attitude, and the proper training, you'll do just fine. We have successfully guided many first-time backpackers on this trail (including all 7 of our children). Plus, nothing makes you appreciate a meal more than carrying it on your back for miles.

What will I eat on the trail? You get to decide! We have found that most backpackers are very particular about their food. Every ounce adds up so every decision counts. For that reason we do not include food in this package and allow you to make those choices yourself and to tailor them to your dietary needs. We have fine tuned our backpacking food list over the years and will be sharing every detail of what we've learned along the way with you.

Are there bathrooms on the trail or at the beach? Yes, they are about as clean and fragrant as you would expect a very remote pit toilet to be. But it's a toilet none the less. For most people, behind the trees is the preferred option. This trip is adventure on every level. We don't call it high adventure for nothing!

What is the weather like on the trail? It's typically warm, with temperatures ranging from the mid 60's to low 80's. It can feel hotter near the coast, especially on sunny days. The trail is located on the wet side of Kauai, so rain is common year-round, especially in the winter months (November to March). Summer tends to be a bit drier, but rain can happen anytime, so be prepared.

What if I'm afraid of heights? If you experience a fear of heights that entirely locks you up and renders you non-functional then you will want to work on that prior to this adventure. Anything less that that...we would say, this adventure is a perfect therapy intervention for you! The beautiful vistas and cliff-side trail sections offer opportunities to challenge and overcome fears and support one another physically and emotionally. If you are not sure how your fear of heights will be triggered on this adventure please reach out. We can quickly assess if this will be a good fit for you, and would prefer to do so before we are on the trail.

Is there cell service on the NaPali coast? No, and it's absolutely amazing! We do carry a satellite phone in case of emergency. You can also share the number with your loved ones at home, so they can reach you in case of an emergency on their end. Our experience has been that disconnecting from our phones is one of the most appealing aspects of this location. It will allow you to be more fully present in the surrounding, activities, and your partner!

Can I swim at the beaches on the NaPali coast? Technically, yes, but it's very risky and not recommended due to strong currents, powerful waves, and no lifeguards. The NaPali Coast is know for unpredictable surf, and there have been multiple people pulled out to sea by rip currents. If the ocean is calm (which isn't often), some experienced swimmers might feel comfortable wading close to the shore. But caution is essential, we would really hate to lose one of you! If you're looking to cool off, the waterfall at camp, or the river (about 1 mile from camp) is a much safer and refreshing option.

What even is a high adventure retreat? Most retreats are designed to help couples (or families, teams, and groups) strengthen their connection through guided experiences that focus on things like communication, emotional connection, and relationship skills. Ours does that too — but with a twist. A High Adventure Retreat is part connection reset, part physical challenge, and part unforgettable experience. We blend meaningful relationship tools with real adventure — the kind that stretches you just enough to grow closer through it. Think: less sitting in circles, more bonding through shared challenge, beauty, and fun.

What type of couples should attend? Any couple who wants to share an unforgettable experience. Whether you’ve been together for years or you're just starting out, whether things feel smooth or a little off — if you’re into meaningful time, a little challenge, and a lot of connection, you’ll fit right in. No drama required. Just show up as you are.

What are Skill Drops? Skill Drops are short, meaningful conversations woven into each retreat — quick hits of insight you can actually use. They're not lectures or therapy sessions, just down-to-earth tools that help you stay connected, navigate stress, and enjoy the moment. Each set of Skill Drops is handpicked for the retreat — based on the setting, the adventure, and the kinds of real-life situations that tend to show up along the way. They’re tailored, relevant, and designed to stick with you long after the trip ends.

Will we have private time, or is everything structured? You'll have plenty of space to just be together. While we’ll have a few group meetups around the campfire and guided conversations along the way, most of the hike is self-paced — no one’s following you around or asking deep questions at mile three. Beach time is largely your own time to relax, explore, or just enjoy each other’s company. During your downtime, we’ll offer a few simple prompts and Skill Drops — nothing heavy, just fun ways to make the most of your time together.

Will we have to share personal issues with our group? There will be several group processing sessions. But think of if more like sitting around a campfire chatting. We'll be there to gently guide the discussion, not to put anyone on the spot. You are not required to share anything. But everyone in the group is welcome to share, and even encouraged to share. Sharing helps the group dynamics tighten, and feel supportive. Sharing also allow individuals and couples to get and receive group feedback, gain insight, and GROW.

Can a retreat help save our relationship? Sure it can. Especially if both partners come in with an open mind, heart, and a willingness to grow. But we would emphasize that a retreat alone can not save a relationship. That will require sustained effort and application of the things learned and experienced. It's not magic, but it does create space for honest conversations, healing, and rebuilding trust. There is no doubt that with effort you can walk away with new perspectives, practical communication tools, and a deeper sense of connection.

What if we want to come but don't have issues in our relationship? COME! Come for the adventure! There is no doubt that whatever the state of your relationship is prior to the retreat, if you engage in the process, you will come back far richer for the experience.

Who are our guides? With 35 years of combined clinical experience and a lifetime of adventuring between us--we're your guides. We've blended our passion for empowering people with our love for the outdoors. We've led countless people along this trail and each journey brings something new. Now, we're excited to share this unforgettable experience with you. Come join us for the adventure of a lifetime!

If this is your first time backpacking the NaPali Coast, get ready for an unforgettable adventure. This world-famous trail, known as the Kalalau Trail, takes you through lush valleys, towering sea cliffs, and secluded beaches, offering some of the most stunning views in Hawaii.

This isn't your typical couples retreat.

It's part adventure, part reset--designed to help you connect, grow, and remember what brought you together in the first place. No formal sessions. No traditional therapy talk. Just real experiences, meaningful moments, and a couple of down-to-earth therapists who weave in just the right amount of insight and support along the way, showing up more like trailmates than clinicians. You'll leave with fresh perspectives and a renewed sense of how to keep tackling life's adventure--together.

WHAT THIS IS (AND WHAT IT ISN'T)

We want you to know what you're signing up for — and just as importantly, what you're not.

WHAT THIS ISN'T:

  • A deep dive into your relationship
We’re both trained, licensed therapists, and we love helping couples do the deeper work — just not on the trail. This retreat isn’t about unpacking your childhood or untangling old wounds. That kind of work has a time and place (and we’d be happy to do it with you in our office or on Zoom). This retreat? It’s not that.

  • Traditional talk therapy in a scenic location
There won’t be couches, clipboards, or clinical lingo. We’ve left the therapy room behind for a reason.

  • About fixing what’s broken
You don’t need to be struggling to benefit from this retreat. In fact, most couples who come are doing quite well — they just want more time, more depth, more connection.

  • A group therapy session
While you'll be with other couples, you won’t be asked to share personal stories or relationship details with the group. Everything is optional, and nothing is forced.

  • All about emotions, all the time
Yes, there will be depth — but there will mostly be laughter, adventure, and space to just be. This isn’t a four-day heart-to-heart. It’s more balanced than that.

  • An intentional reset
Five days carved out just for the two of you — away from your everyday responsibilities — to help you focus on each other and what really matters.

  • A chance to do something new — together
Whether you’re seasoned hikers or total beginners, this is about trying something meaningful side-by-side. The trail naturally creates moments where you have to lean on each other, communicate, and move forward as a team.

  • Present-focused
We’re not dragging the past into the present or stressing about the future. We’re helping you notice what’s right here: the strengths you already have, the habits that keep you close, and the mindset that helps you keep showing up for each other.

  • A way to walk away with real-life tools
You’ll leave with things you can use — not theory or fluff — to support your relationship long after the retreat ends.

  • A fully guided, everything arranged, EPIC adventure

Challenging, beautiful, and worth every single step. We've taken care of          the planning and logistics so you can enjoy the journey.

ITINERARY:

DAY 1        MAY 4, 2026

7 PM - 8:30 PM - Your adventure starts here: Info, Introduction, and Q & A.

*Marriott's Kauai Beach Club check-in is available starting at 4 PM.

We'll kick off the day early--like before the sun's up early. A quick breakfast (included)  will be ready for the road: think protein drinks, fruit parfaits, and a mix of muffins to grab and go. Then we'll drive to the trailhead and start our hike. The day will have a chill but challenging rhythm--hike, rest, snack, enjoy the views, repeat. No rush, just taking it all in and enjoying the journey.  Once we get to camp, we'll set up our tents and settle in. Dinner will be our first real backpacking meal, and trust us--after a day on the trail, freeze-dried food is going to taste amazing. We'll wrap up the evening around the campfire, then drift off to sleep with the sound of waves crashing in the background.

Today is all about letting your body (and your soul) relax. No alarms--wake up whenever you're ready. After yesterday's adventure, this will feel like a total reset. We'll spend the day at the stunning and remote Kalalau Beach. There's no rush, no schedule--just lots of free time to do whatever feels good. Soak up the sun, cool off in the waterfall or nearby river, wander the beach, explore the cliffs, take a nap in the shade--this day is yours. We'll also introduce Skill Drops and have a few guided partner activities available to do throughout the day whenever it feels right--easy, meaningful moments to share and reflect. In the evening, we'll all come together around the campfire as a group before turning in for the night.

Today will be much of the same laid-back goodness--another chance to slow down, soak it all in, and enjoy Kalalau at your own pace. We'll have a fresh set of Skill Drops to explore, offering fresh ways to connect. And for anyone feeling it, we might even rally for a good old-fashioned game of beach whiffle ball. No pressure, just fun in the sun, however you want to spend it. Like the nights before, we will end the evening around the campfire.

Today we hike out. We'll start breaking down camp at sunrise and hit the trail early. The hike will feel familiar--just the reverse of our first day--but with lighter packs and a little extra trail confidence under our belts. Most people find the return hike goes a bit faster, fueled by the growing promise of hot showers, real toilets, and a well-earned, non-freeze-dried meal. Once we're back at the trailhead, we'll head back to Marriott's Kauai Beach Club to get cleaned up and rejoin the world feeling a little more wild and a lot more grounded. That evening, we'll come together one last time to share a final meal at the Plantation House by Gaylord--good food, fresh clothes, and time to reflect on everything we've just experienced. This is where our adventure ends--but hopefully, it's also the start of something new.

*Marriott's Kauai Beach Club check-out is 10 AM  on May 9th.

DAY 2        MAY 5, 2026

DAY 3        MAY 6, 2026

DAY 4        MAY 7, 2026

DAY 5        MAY 8, 2026

SKILL DROPS:

We’ll drop in a few meaningful conversations throughout the retreat — what we call Skill Drops. These aren’t your typical classes. Think of them as quick, interactive conversations (beachside, yes please!) that give you something useful to take home.

We didn’t choose these tools because they sounded good in a book — we chose them because they actually work. They’re tied to the kinds of things that naturally come up when you're adventuring together: your mindset, your stress patterns, the ways you connect (or miss each other) when things get tough.

And it's not just on the trail. These moments — where plans shift, energy dips, or tension creeps in — show up in everyday life too. These Skill Drops are built to help you pause, reset, and move forward as a team — whether you're on mile five or navigating a Monday.

But make no mistake — this isn’t therapy with a scenic backdrop. The conversations you’ll have are real and meaningful, but also down-to-earth and fun. We leave the clinical talk back at the office. This retreat is deeply therapeutic, but in a way that feels more like connection than counseling.

YOU'LL LEAVE WITH:

A Way to Repair  When it Matters Most

Because you will miss the mark sometimes. Learn how to own it, repair it, and move forward without keeping score.

Small repairs → big trust.

A Daily Connection Habit (That Doesn't Feel Forced)

Big conversations are great, but the small ones matter more. Learn how just 10 minutes a day can keep you close, even when life gets full.

10 minutes a day can do more than 2 hours of hashing things out.

A Way To Shift Your Thinking When You Get Stuck

Catch the thoughts that fuel disconnection or frustration, and practice how to shift into a mindset that brings clarity, calm, and compassion.

Change the story change the outcome.

A Practice for Staying Present (With Yourself and Each Other)

It’s easy to get pulled into the past or worry about what’s next. This conversation helps you stay grounded in the moment you’re actually in — with a mindset tool that makes presence more doable, and more powerful.

Fees, Payment, & Cancellation Policy Deposit: A $500 deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your spot. Fully refundable until October 1, 2025 Total Trip Cost: $3,899 per couple Final Balance Due: The remaining $3,399 balance is due on or before February 5, 2026 Refund Policy: Deposit: Non-refundable after October 1, 2025. Remaining Balance: Full refund of the remaining balance if canceled 60 days or more before the retreat. 50% refund of the remaining balance if canceled 30-59 days before the retreat. Non-refundable if canceled 29 days or less before the retreat. Travel Insurance: We strongly encourage participants to purchase travel insurance to protect against unexpected circumstances. If you would like assistance or options for travel insurance providers, please feel free to contact us.

Permits and Weather Permits: Obtaining permits for the Kalalau Trail is one of the most challenging aspects of this retreat. The Kalalau Trail is strictly permitted, and permits are released only 90 days before the trip. Permits for this area can be tricky to get, but we’ve had consistent success in the past and will do everything we can to secure them for your trip. In the unlikely event that we are unable to secure the necessary permits, we will be forced to cancel the retreat. All moneys paid will be fully refunded in this case. For this reason, we strongly encourage participants to wait to book flights until 90 days before the retreat or to book using a flexible fare that allows changes. Weather: The retreat will proceed rain or shine, as long as the trail is open. However, in the rare case that severe weather poses a safety risk or if the trail is officially closed, we may need to cancel the retreat. If we must cancel the retreat due to weather-related conditions, a full refund will be offered. Please note, we cannot be held responsible for weather-related cancellations outside of our control.
