NaPali Coast family

FAQs

Intro

If this is your first time backpacking the Nā Pali Coast, get ready for an unforgettable family adventure. This world-famous trail — known as the Kalalau Trail — winds through lush valleys, towering sea cliffs, and secluded beaches, offering some of the most stunning views in all of Hawaiʻi.

You’ve done beach vacations. You’ve done amusement parks. But this is something entirely different. This is a high adventure retreat for your

family — not the sit-in-a-circle kind, but the kind where you hike, play, problem-solve, and slow down enough to actually see each other. It’s part adventure, part reset — designed to help you step away from the noise and strengthen the bond you share, one mile (and one memory) at a time.

No forced sharing circles. No heavy therapy talk. We promise — your teens won’t even sniff out that anything “therapeutic” is happening. (Believe us, we have teenagers.) What they will notice is the fun, the challenge, the connection, and the chance to experience the world-famous NāPali Coast up close and unplugged, in a way most visitors never get to.  We’ve road-tested this with our own teens—so trust us, it stays fun, and the tools still land.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

WHAT THIS IS (AND WHAT IT ISN'T)

We want you to know what you're signing up for — and just as importantly, what you're not.

WHAT THIS IS:

  • An Adventure That Builds Real-Life Resilience
This is more than just a family trip. It’s a guided adventure through the stunning NaPali Coast, where you’ll face challenges together, build resilience, and learn to manage stress in ways that apply directly to everyday life.

  • A Chance to Connect in a New Way
There’s no better way to bond as a family than through shared experiences. This retreat provides opportunities to connect with each other in meaningful ways — away from screens and distractions, and in a beautiful, peaceful, and challenging environment that makes real conversations flow naturally.

  • A Focus on Practical Skills for the Whole Family
You’ll gain tools that help manage anxiety, strengthen relationships, and boost emotional resilience. These are skills you can take home with you and apply when life gets busy, stressful, or overwhelming.

  • An Opportunity to Create Unforgettable Memories
The memories made here will stay with you for a lifetime. This is a chance to unplug, reconnect, and create something unique and lasting as a family — all while experiencing one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes.

  • A Family Therapy Session in Disguise
While we’ll integrate meaningful, real-life tools to help strengthen your family’s bond, this is not a heavy, therapy-based retreat. You won’t spend your time sitting in a circle talking about your feelings; you’ll be adventuring, connecting, and experiencing things as a family.

  • A Rigid, Structured, “No Fun” Experience
This retreat isn’t about rigid schedules or making you follow a strict path. Most of the adventure is self-paced, so you can take things at your own speed, whether you’re hiking,  or enjoying your downtime at the beach together. It’s about balance — challenging yourselves, but also enjoying the experience.

  • A ‘Fix Your Family’ Retreat
This is not about fixing problems or “repairing” anything. It’s about enhancing your connection, learning helpful skills, and finding new ways to navigate challenges together as a family. This retreat is about growth and discovery, not turning everything upside down.

  • Just Another Vacation
Sure, it’s a trip, but it’s also much more. This isn’t just a break from routine — it’s an opportunity to build stronger bonds and resilience, gain new tools for managing life’s challenges, and create memories that go beyond your typical family vacation.

ITINERARY:

DAY 1        JUNE 22, 2026

7 PM - 8:30 PM - Your adventure starts here: Info, Introduction, and Q & A.

*Marriott's Kauai Beach Club check-in is available starting at 4 PM.

We’ll kick off the day before sunrise with a quick, trail-friendly breakfast: protein drinks, fruit parfaits, muffins — all ready to grab and go. Then it’s off to the trailhead to begin your hike along one of the most breathtaking coastlines in the world. The hike has a rhythm to it — hike, rest, snack, take it all in, repeat. It’s beautiful, but it’s also real. There are a few tricky sections that push your anxiety a bit, and that’s part of the experience. Along the way, we’ll drop in with our first Skill Drop — a short, practical conversation about managing nerves and staying steady when things feel intense.— when your brain starts spinning or your body feels tense — and how to steady yourself in those moments. Think of it as a quick trail talk that helps you and your family feel a little more grounded and confident with each step. Once we arrive at camp, we’ll settle in, set up tents, and wind down with our first real backpacking meal. (Spoiler: freeze-dried food tastes way better after a full day on your feet.) We’ll wrap up the evening around the campfire, reflecting a bit on any anxious moments that popped up, the ways you handled them, and the unexpected lessons along the way. These low-key debriefs often spark the kind of meaningful conversation that

sticks — about growth, challenge, and how we show up for each other in tough moments, both on the trail and back home.

Today is all about letting your body (and your soul) relax. No alarms — wake up whenever you're ready. After yesterday's adventure, this will feel like a total reset. We’ll spend the day at the stunning and remote Kalalau Beach. There’s no rush, no schedule — just plenty of time to do whatever feels good. Soak up the sun, cool off in the waterfall or nearby river, wander the beach, explore the cliffs, play in the waves (safely!) or take a nap in the shade — this day is yours. We’ll also introduce a fun, family-focused Skill Drop. It’s a light, interactive experience designed to help you manage challenges, build teamwork, and maybe even discover something new about how your family works together — all while having a great time.

In the evening, we’ll come together around the campfire, share stories, and wind down before a restful night.

Today will be much of the same laid-back goodness—another chance to slow down, soak it all in, and enjoy Kalalau at your own pace. We’ll have a fresh set of Skill Drops to explore, with some fun, laid-back activities to wrap up your time together. These moments will keep things light, interactive, and totally enjoyable, adding a bit of extra fun before we head into the final evening. And for anyone feeling it, we might even rally for a good old-fashioned game of beach whiffle ball. No pressure, just fun in the sun, however you want to spend it. Like the nights before, we’ll end the evening around the campfire, taking a moment to check in about any nerves that might be coming up for tomorrow’s hike.

We’ll break down camp at sunrise and hit the trail early. The path will feel familiar—just the reverse of Day 1—but with lighter packs and a little more trail confidence under our belts. Most people find the return hike goes a bit quicker, fueled by the promise of hot showers, real toilets, and a well-earned, non-freeze-dried meal. Once we’re back at the trailhead, we’ll return to Marriott’s Kauai Beach Club to clean up and ease back into the world—feeling a little more wild, a lot more grounded. That evening, we’ll come together one last time for a final meal at The Plantation House by Gaylord. It’s a chance to swap stories, enjoy great food in fresh clothes, and reflect on all we’ve experienced.

*Marriott's Kauai Beach Club check-out is 10 AM  on June 27th.

DAY 2        JUNE 23, 2026

DAY 3        JUNE 24, 2026

DAY 4        JUNE 25, 2026

DAY 5        JUNE 26, 2026

SKILL DROPS:

Throughout the retreat, we’ll sprinkle in a few short activities and conversations we call Skill Drops. Each one is different — sometimes it’s a quick trail chat, other times it’s a group game on the beach — but they’re all designed to be simple, engaging, actually useful, and fun!

While every Skill Drop brings something unique, we intentionally thread in tools for navigating anxiety, managing stress, and pushing through challenge and tough moments. Why? Because this trail naturally brings those feelings up — and so does real life, especially for teens. We’ve found that learning these skills in the middle of an adventure, rather than in a classroom or lecture, makes them stick in a way that really works. And because we know the fastest way to lose a teen (or adult) is to make something feel like therapy on vacation, we’re careful to keep it light, natural, and fun — adding to the adventure, not taking away from it.

A Way To Handle the Hard Parts
Because the trail can challenge you in unexpected ways. Learn practical tools to stay calm, manage anxiety, and push through tough

moments — skills you and your teens can take with you beyond the hike.
Small steps → big resilience.

           Pressure Points (Beach Edition)
A game-based activity that playfully explores how each person handles challenge and competition. Expect laughter, teamwork, and surprising insight into your family’s dynamics — all without anyone realizing they’re “learning.”
Playful challenge → real connection.

           Family Dynamics in Action
This group challenge turns patterns into play — a beach-style “survivor” game with just enough friendly chaos to bring out everyone’s role. It’s a light, fun way to build trust, strengthen connection, and see your family in action.
Playful teamwork → deeper trust.

          Pack It Out
Around the campfire on our final night, we’ll reflect on what stuck. Not a lecture, just a chance to share what each person is taking home — new tools, inside jokes, shared memories — and how to keep the momentum going.

What this is/isn't

Where is the NaPali Coast? The NaPali Coast is located on the northwest coast of Kauai. It stretches for about 17 miles and is famous for its dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, waterfalls, and remote beaches. The destination for this adventure is Kalalau Beach, often referred to as the "last beach." Because there are no roads it can only be accessed by hiking the 11-mile Kalalau Trail, or by kayaking a large stretch of the coast. Boats are not permitted to access Kalalau Beach. This adventure retreat takes us up and down the Kalalau trail to Kalalau beach, which will be our remote home for 3 nights.

How hard is the Kalalau Trail (for families)? It’s definitely a challenge — 11 miles in, 11 miles out, and about 5,000 feet of elevation gain round trip — but it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever share as a family. The trail winds along Kauai’s breathtaking NāPali Coast and includes muddy sections, stream crossings, and uneven terrain. Everyone will be carrying their own pack, so it takes preparation, a good attitude, and plenty of snacks (we’ve learned snacks solve a lot). We’ll move at a steady, family-friendly pace with meet-up points along the way. You’re welcome to hike with others or take it at your own pace — whatever works best for your crew. You don’t need to be extreme, just willing. We’ll provide a simple training guide to help your family prepare, feel confident, and even get excited. The reward? Kalalau Beach — remote, stunning, and unforgettable. It’s a place few people get to, and your family will have earned every step.

What type of shape do we need to be in? You don’t need to be a marathon runner or a hardcore mountaineer — but a reasonable level of fitness is important. This is a challenging hike, and everyone (including teens) needs to be able to carry their own full backpack. The good news? There’s plenty of time to prepare, and we’ll share practical tips to help your whole family train. We’ve found that having something to train for boosts motivation and even helps teens (and adults) make healthier choices in the weeks leading up to the trip. If your family is comfortable hiking for a few hours with a pack, you’ll do great. The key to this hike is pacing yourselves, staying hydrated, and taking plenty of breaks to soak in the seriously stunning views. It’s hard, yes — but it’s also incredibly rewarding. We’re all more capable than we often give ourselves credit for.

What if we’ve never been backpacking before? Then you're in for an adventure — and you’re in the right place. We can’t think of a better way to experience your first backpacking trip than as a family, with experienced guides and a stunning trail that’s challenging but doable. Backpacking is really just hiking with extra weight and a lot more snacks. With the right gear, realistic expectations, and a bit of training, most families are surprised by what they can do. We’ve guided many first-time backpackers (including our own kids) on this trail, and we’ve learned that shared challenge brings families together in ways nothing else quite can. Plus, nothing makes a simple meal taste better than carrying it in on your back — and earning it together.

What will we eat on the trail? That’s up to you — and that’s part of the fun! We’ve found that most backpackers have strong preferences when it comes to trail food. Every ounce matters, so it’s important to pack meals and snacks that work for your body, your tastes, and your dietary needs. Because of that, the food you eat on the trail isn’t included in the package — but you won’t be on your own. We’ll share our tried-and-true backpacking food lists, tips, and meal ideas (including what works best for teens), so you can feel confident and well-fed out there.

Are there bathrooms on the trail or at the beach? Yes, they are about as clean and fragrant as you would expect a very remote pit toilet to be. But it's a toilet none the less. For most people, behind the trees is the preferred option. This trip is adventure on every level. We don't call it high adventure for nothing!

What is the weather like on the trail? It's typically warm, with temperatures ranging from the mid 60's to low 80's. It can feel hotter near the coast, especially on sunny days. The trail is located on the wet side of Kauai, so rain is common year-round, especially in the winter months (November to March). Summer tends to be a bit drier, but rain can happen anytime, so be prepared.

What if I (or my kid) is afraid of heights? A fear of heights is totally normal — and something many people on this trail have faced. There are a few narrow sections with drop-offs, but most hikers manage just fine with support, pacing, and a little preparation. If your fear (or your child’s) is intense enough to cause panic or freeze responses, let’s talk before you sign up. We want to make sure this is a good fit and help you prepare if needed. That said, this kind of adventure can actually be a powerful, confidence-building experience. One of our Skill Drops is specifically designed to help you understand and manage anxiety — making this the perfect setting to learn tools you can use on (and off) the trail. With the right support, it’s often the exact kind of challenge that helps people (of all ages) feel stronger, braver, and more capable.

Is there cell service on the NaPali coast? Nope — and that’s one of the best parts. We do carry a satellite phone for emergencies, and you’ll be able to share the number with loved ones at home just in case. We’ve found that being off-grid gives families a rare chance to truly unplug. With no distractions, you can be fully present with each other, take in the beauty around you, and enjoy the kind of quality time that’s hard to come by in everyday life.

Can I swim at the beaches on the Nā Pali Coast? Technically, yes — but it’s risky and not recommended. The Nā Pali Coast is known for powerful waves, strong currents, and no lifeguards. Even experienced swimmers have been caught off guard by rip currents, and there have been multiple tragic incidents over the years. That said, the ocean tends to be calmer in June, and on especially mellow days, it might feel safe to play in the waves close to shore. Ultimately, we’ll leave that decision up to you — just know that we’ll always encourage caution. If you're looking to cool off, the waterfall at camp or the nearby river (about a mile away) are much safer and still incredibly refreshing options.

What even is a High Adventure Family Retreat? Most retreats are designed to help families strengthen their connection through guided experiences focused on communication, emotional bonding, and relationship skills. Ours does that too — just with a twist. A High Adventure Family Retreat is part connection reset, part physical challenge, and part unforgettable experience. We blend meaningful, real-life tools with true adventure — the kind that stretches you just enough to grow closer through it. Think less sitting around talking about connection, and more laughing, sweating, supporting each other, and making memories you’ll be talking about for years.

What type of families should attend? Any family looking to share an unforgettable adventure together. Whether you want to strengthen your bond, make lasting memories, or simply break out of the routine and embark on an amazingly unique adventure together, this retreat is for you. Whether your kids are teens or older, whether things are going smoothly or you’re navigating a bit of tension — if you’re ready for adventure, a little challenge, and quality time together, you’ll fit right in. No pressure, no perfection. Just come as you are and get ready for something special.

What are Skill Drops? Skill Drops are short, meaningful conversations woven into each retreat — quick hits of insight you can actually use. They're not lectures or therapy sessions, just down-to-earth tools that help you stay connected, navigate stress, and enjoy the moment. Each set of Skill Drops is handpicked for the retreat — based on the setting, the adventure, and the kinds of real-life situations that tend to show up along the way. They’re tailored, relevant, and designed to stick with you long after the trip ends.

Will we have family time, or is everything structured? For the most part, the trip is unstructured, giving you plenty of time to enjoy your family vacation as a family. While there will be a few group moments like campfire chats and optional Skill Drops, most of the experience is self-paced. You'll have space to explore and relax without a strict schedule. Beach days, in particular, are yours to spend however you choose—whether it’s taking a beach walk, exploring, playing, or simply enjoying the stunning views together. We’ll offer a few lighthearted prompts and Skill Drops along the way, but these are meant to enhance the experience, not take it over. The goal is to create a natural flow that allows you to connect and enjoy the adventure at your own pace.

Why is there an age requirement for this trip? This is a physically demanding hike, and every participant needs to be able to carry their own full pack — gear, food, water, everything — for multiple days on a remote trail. We’ve done this hike with our own kids and know firsthand what it takes. For safety, endurance, and everyone’s overall enjoyment, we don’t recommend this trip for younger children. While age is a factor, it’s really about readiness. Some teens are ready at 12, others might not be. Overall, we’ve found that teens are capable of more than we often give them credit for. When they’re given real responsibility and meaningful challenge, they tend to rise to it in really cool ways. If you’re not sure whether your child is ready, reach out. We’re happy to talk it through with you.

What if my kid complains or struggles? It’s totally normal! In fact, they probably will — and maybe even cry (some of ours did). But that’s part of the process. Challenging experiences help us grow, and learning to push through tough moments is one of the best ways to build resilience as a family. Remember, this isn’t about being perfect. It’s about embracing the ups and downs of the adventure. We feel confident that your family will look back on any "hard parts" — whether emotional or physical — and laugh about them for years to come. These are the kinds of experiences that create lasting memories, and everyone comes out stronger for it.

Who are our guides? With 35 years of combined clinical experience and a lifetime of adventuring between us--we're your guides. We've blended our passion for empowering people with our love for the outdoors. Our role is simple — we’re here to support your adventure, not micromanage it. We’ll be on the trail with you, offering guidance when it’s needed and giving you space when it’s not. Think of us as part trail guide, part campfire crew — here to help you navigate the journey, handle any hiccups, and make the experience even more meaningful (and fun). We've led countless people along this trail — and no two journeys are ever the same. Each family brings their own dynamic, energy, and story, which is what makes every trip so special. Now, we're excited to share this unforgettable experience with your family. Come join us for an adventure of a lifetime!

For this reason, we strongly encourage participants to wait to book flights until 90 days before the retreat or to book using a flexible fare that allows changes. Weather: The retreat will proceed rain or shine, as long as the trail is open. However, in the rare case that severe weather poses a safety risk or if the trail is officially closed, we may need to cancel the retreat.
