NaPali Coast (couples) FAQs

Where is the NaPali Coast?
The NaPali Coast is located on the northwest coast of Kauai. It stretches for about 17 miles and is famous for its dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, waterfalls, and remote beaches. The destination for this adventure is Kalalau Beach, often referred to as the "last beach." Because there are no roads it can only be accessed by hiking the 11-mile Kalalau Trail, or by kayaking a large stretch of the coast. Boats are not permitted to access Kalalau Beach.
This adventure retreat takes us up and down the Kalalau trail to Kalalau beach, which will be our remote home for 3 nights.
How difficult is the Kalalau trail hike?
Let's put it this way--your legs will hate you, but your soul will thank you. The 11-mile (one way) Kalalau Trail is definitely challenging, but it's also incredibly rewarding. Expect some steep climbs, narrow cliffside paths, and possibly muddy conditions. The reward is some of the most breathtaking coastal views in the world, hidden beaches, and true sense of adventure.
We have found that most people are capable of more than they realize. It's not too late to start preparing your mind and body. By accepting this challenge you will belong to a very small group of humans to have ever visited this place on foot.

What type of shape do I need to be in for this trip?
You don't need to be a marathon runner or a hardcore mountaineer, but a good level of fitness is necessary. The good news is there is plenty of time to prepare and we will give you lots of tips for your training. We have found that having something to train for increases motivation to exercise and makes it easier to say no to the ice cream and Oreos at night (sometimes).
If you're comfortable hiking for a few hours with a weighted backpack, you'll do great! They key to this hike is pacing yourself, staying hydrated, and taking plenty of breaks to enjoy the stunning views...emphasis on STUNNING.
How long does the hike take?
ALL DAY. We start hiking at sunrise and typically limp into camp around dinner time.

What if I've never been backpacking before?
Then you're in for an adventure and have come to the right place! We can't think of a better place for your first backpacking adventure.
Backpacking is basically hiking with a little extra weight and a lot more snacks. As long as you're prepared with the right gear, a good attitude, and the proper training, you'll do just fine. We have successfully guided many first-time backpackers on this trail. Plus, nothing makes you appreciate a meal more than carrying it on your back for miles.
What will I eat on the trail?
You get to decide! We have found that most backpackers are very particular about their food. Every ounce adds up so every decision counts. For that reason we do not include food in this package and allow you to make those choices yourself and to tailor them to your dietary needs.
We have fine tuned our backpacking food list over the years and will be sharing every detail of what we've learned along the way with you.

Are there bathrooms on the trail or at the beach?
Yes, they are about as clean and fragrant as you would expect a very remote pit toilet to be. But it's a toilet none the less. For most people, behind the trees is the preferred option.
This trip is adventure on every level. We don't call it high adventure for nothing!

What is the weather like on the trail?
It's typically warm, with temperatures ranging from the mid 60's to low 80's. It can feel hotter near the coast, especially on sunny days. The trail is located on the wet side of Kauai, so rain is common year-round, especially in the winter months (November to March). Summer tends to be a bit drier, but rain can happen anytime, so be prepared.

What if I'm afraid of heights?
If you experience a fear of heights that entirely locks you up and renders you non-functional then you will want to work on that prior to this adventure. Anything less that that...we would say, this adventure is a perfect therapy intervention for you! The beautiful vistas and cliff-side trail sections offer opportunities to challenge and overcome fears and support one another physically and emotionally.
If you are not sure how your fear of heights will be triggered on this adventure please reach out. We can quickly assess if this will be a good fit for you, and would prefer to do so before we are on the trail.
What gear do I need?
Basic backpacking gear. Backpack, light-weight sleeping bag (doesn't need to be rated for temps much lower than 60 degrees) sleeping pad, tent, backpacking chair, jet boil, comfortable hiking shoes, trekking poles, and water bottle.
We'll provide you with a detailed packing list after booking.

Is there cell service on the NaPali coast?
No, and it's absolutely amazing! We do carry a satellite phone in case of emergency. You can also share the number with your loved ones at home, so they can reach you in case of an emergency on their end.
Our experience has been that disconnecting from our phones is one of the most appealing aspects of this location. It will allow you to be more fully present in the surrounding, activities, and your partner!

Can I swim at the beaches on the NaPali coast?
Technically, yes, but it's very risky and not recommended due to strong currents, powerful waves, and no lifeguards. The NaPali Coast is know for unpredictable surf, and there have been multiple people pulled out to sea by rip currents.
If the ocean is calm (which isn't often), some experienced swimmers might feel comfortable wading close to the shore. But caution is essential, we would really hate to lose one of you! If you're looking to cool off, the waterfall at camp, or the river (about 1 mile from camp) is a much safer and refreshing option.
What even is a High Adventure Retreat?
A "retreat" is designed to be a getaway for couples, families, teams or other groups to enhance their relationship. This is often accomplished through guided activities, and sometimes therapy sessions. Retreats can focus on various aspects of relationships such as communication, relationship skill building, emotional connection, and more.
Our retreats are unique in that they include a high level of adventure and fun, activities that are meant to feel challenging at times, and also include therapeutic processes. Think of it as "adventure bonding" or "challenge bonding."

What type of couples should attend?
ALL KINDS! Newlyweds, long-term partners, those facing challenges or stuck in a rut, and even those who aren't facing challenges, who just want to deepen their connection and share an adventure together.
All couples are welcome and can benefit.
What therapeutic activities are included?
Most days will include some form of adventure or challenge--an experience that's inherently therapeutic. These moments create space for meaningful conversations, self-discovery, and deeper connection with your partner.
In the evenings, we'll gather for a single process group around the campfire. Our one-of-a-kind program blends evidence-based therapy approaches--like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and the Gottman Method--with the insights we've gained through a decade of working with couples, as well as lessons from our own personal journeys.
Even during downtime, you may be offered guided prompts or fun conversation starters--some deep, some lighthearted-- to spark connection and laughter. It's all about making the most of your time together in this unique setting (without it feeling like homework).

Will we have private time, or is everything structured?
There will be plenty of both! Don't worry -- no one will be trailing behind you on the hike or at the beach trying to get you to spill your soul. In fact, the hike itself will be mostly self-paced.
But during your private time, you'll usually be offered prompts or activities to try out with your partner. They are thoughtfully designed to help you get the most out of your time, your experience, and your relationship.
Will we have to share personal issues with our group?
There will be several group processing sessions. But think of if more like sitting around a campfire chatting. We'll be there to gently guide the discussion, not to put anyone on the spot. You are not required to share anything. But everyone in the group is welcome to share, and even encouraged to share. Sharing helps the group dynamics tighten, and feel supportive. Sharing also allow individuals and couples to get and receive group feedback, gain insight, and GROW.

Can a retreat help save our relationship?
Sure it can. Especially if both partners come in with an open mind, heart, and a willingness to grow. But we would emphasize that a retreat alone can not save a relationship. That will require sustained effort and application of the things learned and experienced. It's not magic, but it does create space for honest conversations, healing, and rebuilding trust.
There is no doubt that with effort you can walk away with new perspectives, practical communication tools, and a deeper sense of connection.

What if we want to come but don't have any major issues in our relationship?
COME! Come for the adventure! There is no doubt that whatever the state of your relationship is prior to the retreat, if you engage in the process, you will come back far richer for the experience.
